Marcia Griffiths began her musical career in her homeland of Kingston, Jamaica nearly 60 years ago with Byron Lee and The Dragonaires. She would go on to sing with a veritable who’s who of Jamaican reggae artists but it was her time spent as a member of Bob Marley’s backup singers The I-Threes (along with Judy Mowatt and Rita Marley) that made her name recognizable here in the States. Of course she would go on to a very successful solo career highlighted by her late 80s mega smash “Electric Boogie”, a remake of an old Bunny Wailer tune that exploded worldwide thanks to the line dance, The Electric Slide which the tune helped spawn.

Marcia made her Prospect Park debut Saturday night, which considering the West Indian population of Brooklyn is kind of surprising. None the less, despite severe thunder and lightning and heavy rains passing through a couple hours prior to showtime, The Lena Horne Bandshell was overflowing with a plethora of Marcia’s brothers and sisters from the Carribean. And despite oppressive heat and humidity, the 74 year old Griffiths reveled in the “family reunion” like vibes of the evening.

By the way, Brooklyn’s own Brown Rice Family did an irie job of getting things going as the vening’s opening act.
