Small Crush are in the midst of their first headlining US tour and the band hit the stage at Mercury Lounge on Saturday night to a packed and very close to sold out room. I’ve been a fan of Small Crush ever since their initial S/T album came out in July of 2019 on Asian Man Records. I trust Mike Park’s tastes in music and I recall thinking back then that “he’d done it once again” with these (at the time) teens from Oakland, CA. Mike actually discovered these kids playing at Oakland’s fabled 924 Gilman Street so that in and of itself goes a long way to instant credibility. Having passed through NYC a handful of times in a support role, I’d unfortunately never been able to make it to any of their shows but when I saw they were finally hitting the road as a well deserved headliner, I knew it was a must see show for me. Front person, lead singer and guitarist Logan Hammon along with the rest of Small Crush proved to be everything I expected and then some. With a set of jangly, indie infused power pop the band performed a plethora of tunes representing a perfect cross section of tunes from both the S/T debut along with last year’s stellar LP, Penelope.
