My man Sammy Kay announce overnight that he would be releasing on July 19th another new album called July 1960 which is currently up for pre-sale over at his bandcamp page. As a preview to the LP, the second single from the album, “How Fast To Run” is now available for your listening pleasure over on Spotify. I say its the second single only because Sammy dropped “Meet You In Mexico” back in March but to the best of my knowledge never mentioned that it was part of a forthcoming full length album.
“How Fast To Run” starts off with a tragically beautiful pedal steel riff from our mutual bud John Calvin Abney that just might bring a tear to one’s eye its so sweet. And if the pedal steel doesn’t get you, once Sammy’s whisky & cigarette soaked gravel voice kicks in, you’re sure to feel that punch to the gut meloncholly which Kay manages to always nail with his lyrics. Sammy tells great stories and despite a comical and often hilarious IRL persona, his lyrics are brimming with the sadness and determination of one who is fighting and clawing to beat the odds of life. No matter how many times his protagonists are knocked down they (like Sammy himself) always seem to fight their way back up, unfortunately, many times to be knocked right back down. “How To Run Fast” and “Meet You In Mexico” both show promises that July 1960 just might be the album that beats the odds and keeps my friend Sammy from getting knocked back down. Give it a listen and if you like what you hear, per-order the album.
