Upon first listening to the new single from Glimmer this morning, my initial reaction was, “Holy shit, Jeff Moore, principal songwriter, singer and guitarist for Glimmer is actually an AI Bot!” From the opening choppy guitar strums on, “Homesick” comes off as the dirty grungy child spawned by a drunken illicit tryst between NIrvana and Dinosaur Jr.
I haven’t been able to stop listening to this one since it hit my inbox this morning. It just keeps smashing me over the head with that 90’s indie grit which just makes you yearn for those days just before 120 Minutes exploded when one had to rely on your local slacker record store clerk for either a spot on recomendation or a back handed sarcastic eyeroll when you brought something to the register that wasn’t deemed “cool” enough. “Homesick” is that single which slacker clerk plays 100 times in a row. Not that it doesn’t deserve to be played on constant repeat, it most certainly does.
“Homesick” is loud and soft at the same time. It is introspective and anthemic at the same time. It makes you want to jump up and down and pump your fists in the air and then it makes you want to slowly sway back and forth. It does all of these and more. Congrats to Glimmer on making a surefire summer burner. I can guarantee that this single will not be a “summer bummer”.
For those of us within the NY metro area this weekend, Glimmer will be playing at The Woodshop on Friday, June 7th and at 18th Ward Brewery (courtesy of The New Colossus Summer Music Festival) during the afternoon on Saturday, the 8th.
