2015 saw 4 musicians, Bryan Quinn on guitars, vocals, synths, & percussion, Renaud Chauré on guitars & vocals, Hillevi Robertsson on bass & vocals and
Arthur Chen on drums from The US, Sweden, Belgium and France get together in Paris to form Healees. The foursome’s joint appreciation for reverb, distortion, jangly guitar and muffled non descript vocals would eventually lead the band to a sound that reminds me of a multitude of other bands such as MBV, Slowdive, Chameleons, Sonic Youth and DIIV to name a few. Yet Healees, despite these similarities to what I already know, have a distinct feel and sound of their own. With a sound that almost seems cinematic in scope, the songs on Coin de l’œil emote all kinds of varying emtions, from the twirling weightlessness of “White Cloud” to “Side Eye” with its deep churning guitar riffs which builds and builds with intensity, one can close their eyes and envision it being the sound track for the climactic scene in an undisclosed blockbuster thriller.
To make a not too long review short, if you enjoy shoegazy dreamy power pop heavily laced with layers and loops and plenty of danceable hooks, give this debut album from Healees a listen
