Futurebirds and Color Green at Bowery Ballroom (2024-11-24)

Futurebirds brought their brand of southern fried rock and roll to New York City last weekend with a 2 night run at Bowery Ballroom and to quote rhythm guitarist and vocalist Dan Womack, it might have been the best shows and experience they’ve ever had in the Big Apple. Over the course of those 2 nights the band managed to cram 37 rocket fueled songs into their sets, only repeating a pair.

Hailing from Athens, GA (home of the Georgia Bulldogs and a couple of bands that “y’all” might have heard of), the boys have been a mainstay on SEC campuses for years now and Sunday night it seemed like it was a Saturday afternoon gearing up for GameDay. The band and the crowd were in top form and absolutely no one could possibly have been disappointed with the performance we got.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention opening acts, Color Green, a band I’ve been listening to for a couple of years now, since the release of their eponymous debut LP but had never seen. Their brand of cosmic country, for those into that sort of thing is something to behold. Color Green have been on my radar for some time now. Their debut album from 2022 scratches that cosmic country itch like the classic NRPS did back in the midst 70s. They’ve followed that LP up with their sophomore release, FOOL’S PARADE, another gem which just builds even more depth into the genre that they seem to be masters of. So needless to say, their opening for Futurebirds at Bowery Ballroom was just about a dream lineup. Anyway, Color Green was everything I might have expected and significantly more. And by “more” I mean I was in no way prepared for the psychedelic polyphonic stream of sounds the group presented to all of us. The stretched out jams were never tumultuous yet they were also never superfluous either. The instrumentation blended together with the fluidity of a babbling brook bounding down a hillside.
