J.Mascis & Mike Polizze Live at Racket NYC (2025-02-13)
I was supposed to see J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr and Mike Polizze of Purling Hiss at Racket back in November but that short solo tour had to be postponed due to health issues. The rescheduled date was Thursday night and holy hell, it was well worth the wait.
First off, I’d never seen Mike outside of his work with Purling Hiss and I have to say that his adept guitar work was a revelation…no small fete considering who he was opening things up for.
As for J’s set, as one would expect it was a masterful mix of Dinosaur Jr tunes, covers (his version of Phoebe Bridger’s “Motion Sickness” was one of the highlights of the evening) along with a healthy dose of songs (repleat with handmade poster board cue cards with lyrics) from his most recent solo album, What Do We Do Now, which came out last year and to which the original tour was setup to support.
With this week’s announcement of the upcoming Dinosaur Jr. coheadline tour with Snail Mail, the timing of these solo shows was absolutely spot on.
