Snocaps – Snocaps

Social media has been teasing something happening in the Waxahatchee, Allison Crutchfield and MJ Lenderman sphere for a couple of weeks now. We woke up this morning to find out what the rumblings were alluding to. With virtually little fanfare (besides the cryptic social media teases) the Crutchfield sisters along with MJ Lenderman and Brad Cook released an eponymous album on Anti- Records under the name Snocaps.
The album itself, which was recorded in one week’s time at Brad Cook’s home studio, is somewhat of a break from the countrified Americana that we’ve become accustomed to from Waxahatchee after the success of albums like Tigers Blood, Saint Cloud and the collaborative album with Jess Williams, I Walked With You, A Ways, as Plains. From the limited listening I’ve had an opportunity to get in this morning, what I’m hearing is more akin to Katie’s earlier low-fi indie sounds from Ivy Tripp and Cerulean Salt, albeit with a slight and very subtle twangy touch.
Obviously, this one will demand a significant amount of additional listening but my early feelings about what I’ve listened to thus far is this will be a keeper from the musical year of 2025. Oh, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention that you all should be keeping your eyes pealed for some live date anouncements in the future. The initial press release states that there will be a limited number of shows from this ensemble after which the group will be put to rest.
