Never Turns To Night – Bory (Bleak Enterprise)

Bory is the nom de plume of Portland, OR musician Brenden Ramirez who after moving to Portland and coming from a primarily jazz background found himself immersed in the city’s power pop scene spearheaded by Mo Troper. Ramirez found himself playing guitar in Troper’s touring band and released his debut LP, Who’s A Good Boy, in 2023.

With today’s release of Bory’s sophomore album, Never Turns to Night, Ramirez appears to be picking right up where Good Boy left off. Opening track, “We’ll Burn That Bridge When We Get To It” starts off with almost a bossa nova kind of rythm before it delves into a progy guitar solo all the while we’re treated to a hook laden power pop melody.

The second track on the album, “Living Proof” is a driving, guitar heavy supercharged by the pounding drumming provided by Alien Boy’s Sonia Weber. And as the album proceeds we get more of the same, guitar fueled power pop that breaths fresh air into the lungs.

Depending on what song you’re diving into you’re going to be reminded of such musical groups as Dinosaur Jr., Big Star and Dead Stars. There’s even a strong nod to Elliot Smith on the brooding slow burner “Exactly What I Needed”.

All in all, Never Turns To Night is truly a great sophomore effort from Bory with a little bit of everything for every set of ears, all while still following the true to form motif of power pop. So do yourself a favor and slam that link to the album and after giving it a listen, drop a couple of dollars Bory’s way and download it or better yet buy the physical copy. And, today being the first Friday of the month, there’s the added bonus of today being Bandcamp Friday, so Bory will get 100% of your money!
