House of Dead Memories – Sugar
The internet has been bubbling with curiosity for a week now ever since Bob Mould’s old band Sugar created an Instagram account last week. Were they re-releasing Copper Blue? Was it going to be some kind of retrospective box set? Were they getting back together again? The answer came this morning with the announcement the band was indeed getting back together for at least 4 shows in May 2026, two in New York City and two in London. The band only existed for 3 years but the trio of Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, with their full length LP Copper Blue, the follow up EP, Beaster and to a lesser extent their final LP, File Under: Easy Listening produced some of the most iconic music of the early 90’s.
Along with the tour dates announcement, came the release of the band’s first new music in 30 years, “House of Dead Memories” Starting off with Mould’s classic overpowering guitar, the tune careens imediately into quintisential Sugar territory. As to whether this song is a precursor to a future album, that remains to be seen. That being said, there is a forthcoming box set due out November 28th, part of Record Store Day. The Singles Collection will be a four LP box set collection out on BMG Records.
House Of Dead Memories (lyrics)
I gave you years of my life
But you always wanted more
I turn coal into diamonds
You always wanted more
There’s a limit to what I can do
There’s a limit to what I can do
I cannot make this work on my own
I need some help, I’m living alone in a House of dead memories
I thought we agreed To leave the past behind
Forget it, but you keep reminding me
With insecurities, and I Can’t reassure enough
So we keep living in this house I cannot find a cure
Cannot find a remedy
Final diagnosis: Move along
Nothing left to see
