Nothing’s Wasted On The Soul – Joey Kneiser (Young Buffalo Records)

What can I possibly say about Joey Kneiser which I haven’t said over and over again.  Joey’s one of the best songwriters out there and it goes without saying that it’s a damned shame that he and his oeuvre of material, both from his days with Glossary as well as his more recent solo material goes largely unnoticed outside of a relatively small subset of the listening population.  Nothing’s Wasted On The Soul picks right up from where we last were when Kneiser last sent us new material.  The album starts out with Joey’s smooth soulful croon on “Forever, Ramona”.  “Nothing’s Wasted On The Soul”, the title track and second song on the album sounds like it could be a reprise of “Some Eternal Spark” off of Glossary’s last album Long Live All of Us.  And that in a nutshell is the beauty of Joey’s songwriting and music.  It feels familiar, even when it isn’t.  It brings you to a place, maybe a place in time or perhaps an actual geographic locale, but nonetheless it always manages to conjure happier simple times and in these crazy days that’s something we all need more of.
